Steel Shelving System

This installation was designed for the accreditation visit at the RISD Department of Architecture. The intention was to design something that utilizes simple cost effective materials, sheet steel and plywood, but would also maximize the use of those materials, eliminating waste. The folded steel shelving is generated from a 4’x 8’ sheet of 18 gauge steel that folds through to define the program while adding structure to the steel. The folded tabs where the shelving is attached to the plywood panels provide additional structure to the steel spans. The vertical wood panels are made up of half 4’x 8’ sheets of 3/4” plywood drilled with a matrix of holes to receive the different shelving components. The wood panels can be utilized as pin-up space when no shelving units are needed and double as window shades as they slide on their suspended tracks allowing light to filter through the matrix.
